Why Community College? Why Not?
Thinking about transitioning out of the Corps? Community college can be a great option to help you achieve your educational goals without breaking the bank. It also gives you the chance to adapt to an academic environment before undertaking a 4-year degree.
There are approximately 1200 regionally accredited community colleges across the United States offering programs in fields of study from art to political science. Read on for even more reasons to make community college the next stop on your way to a degree.
Affordable Education
Community college tuition and fees are lower than those at 4-year colleges and universities. By taking the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at a community college, you can reduce the total cost of your education substantially. Your Tuition Assistance and VA GI Bill benefits also apply, making the cost of attending even lower.
Credit Transfer
A majority of community colleges have agreements with 4-year colleges and universities that allow you to transfer your community college credits to a bachelor’s degree program. Some state universities even guarantee your entry as a third-year student if you have completed all the course requirements for the first two years of study.
Supportive Environment
The primary mission of the community college is to ensure all students achieve their academic goals. They offer smaller class sizes and support services including tutoring, study skills, workshops, academic advising, counseling, and career planning. Community colleges provide an atmosphere in which you can ask questions and build relationships with your instructors and classmates.
